Description
Kamal el-din Hussein, the Minister of Education at the time, formed a committee in 9/12/1954 headed by Selim Hassan. The main objective of the committee was to visualize the effects of the “High Dam Project” on the Nubian monuments and to carry a quick scientific registration of all ancient sites within the Egyptian territories. They did not include the region south of Adndan. Selim Hassan, member of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, was appointed president of the committee which issued “Report on the Monuments of Nubia likely to be Submerged by Sudd el Ali water" in Arabic, English, and French, Cairo, 1955. From 1955 to 1960 Egypt's Antiquities Department, Documentation Center, and Cairo University were engaged in eight projects under the supervision of Selim Hassan. He played a leading role in the operations which ranged from dismantling temples and documenting reliefs to cutting out rock drawings in the desert remote areas. According to the report, the committee started to work in 22/12/1954. They went to Aswan in 24/12/1954. The report was presented to the Minister of Education in March, 1955 and was comprised of five sections.
