Description
After scouring the causeway of Khafra in Giza in 1935, Selim Hassan decided to excavate the area east the granite gateway of King Unas’ (Wanis) Funerary Temple; thus he discovered the causeway and some of the walls of the valley temple. According to Selim Hassan’s notes, the Valley Temple of Unas was first discovered by Alexandre Barsanti in 1899-1900. In 1937-1938, Selim Hassan thought about the presence of a causeway linking the two temples of Unas, so he led the excavations east of the Funerary Temple of King Unas scouring 250 m along the causeway. He discovered rare and unique scenes, in addition to a reused block from a seated statuette. In 1956-1957, the general director of the Antiquities Department saw the absolute importance of clearing the whole of the causeway. Architect Awad Raslan proceeded with the cleaning of the causeway under the direction of Selim Hassan. They reconstructed part of it in 1960.
